Chicago Judge On Review After Texting Racist Ankle Monitor Photo

A Chicago judge would be subject to review less than a year after being re-elected to the bench. Judge Caroline Glennon Goodman worked for the Cook County Pretrial Division until January 10. Another judge reassigned her after a text exposed a stereotypical meme clowning about the future of black children.

So boom! Here’s what happened with the Chicago judge

The Chicago judge thought she had sent her husband’s “Christmas humor idea” to a friend. What made my husband Goodman laugh was a piece of art depicting a black child on a fake Little Tikes “My First Ankle Monitor” toy. The AI-generated image is said to come from a TikTok video. However, Caroline mistakenly sent the racist joke to another judge after apparently confusing similar registered contacts, by Injustice Watch.

As a result, Judge Timothy Evans temporarily reassigned Caroline Glennon-Goodman. That means it will no longer determine whether criminal defendants will face prison time, be released or be monitored with electronic devices like ankle bracelets. However, the details of his daily duties are unclear.

In addition, the incident was reportedly referred to the Judicial Commission of Inquiry for further information on sanctions. In the meantime, Caroline will also face implicit bias training, and a former Cook County prosecutor will replace her on the bench.

Legal organization calls Caroline Glennon-Goodman via text message

The Cook County Bar Association called out Caroline for releasing the AI-generated image. In its statement to Injustice Watch, the association refused to excuse the erroneous nature of the text.

“It is our understanding that the photo was intended to be shared with a different audience and that the judge involved has apologized profusely as a result,” CCBA told the outlet. “Nevertheless, it is inappropriate to share such media, regardless of the intended audience. Discernment and judgment are of the utmost importance to a judge’s qualifications. Any judge should be impartial enough to no longer spread such a racist trope.

The details of Judge Goodman’s apology are unknown. The statement added that the image fuels negative narratives about black people, particularly black men, in the United States. Ironically, Black Business Reports that the Chicago judge has a reputation for being lenient on detention requests. She began her legal career as a public defender in 1997.
