When Blumhouse and Universal Unleashed “M3gan” on the world in 2022No one could have predicted the feeling she would become. Well, nobody rightthat’s to say. The queer audience took a look at this “titanium” murder doll and said: “Mother”. Its stellar performance at the box office has given way to the inevitable suite, and the house that Blum built has doubled, otherwise triple Below, by addressing the largest M3GAN fans base leading to the exit of the suite. An army of dancers from M3gan presented itself for the Hollywood West pride parade in early June, the trailer used “Oops! … I did it again” like a needle fall, and they teased M3gan in disguise serving a furtive seam and boasting of a fabulous “M3gan 2.0” Honeyyyyyyy.
But in an attempt to resume lightning in a bottle of the first film, going “T2: Complete Judgment Day By upgrading M3GAN in the hero necessary to save the day to face the logistics and the infiltration of the autonomous military engagement known as Amelia (Ivanna Sakhno) and to become shamelessly to a queer audience, “M3GAN 2.0” has fun with the window horror and becomes an action program directly to the sci-fi of the 1990s. As a follow-up. I’m not sure it works. As a film deeply inspired by the crazy action thrillers of the early 90s that played Ad Nauseum on USA Network in the middle of the afternoon a weekday? He rocks, but his dedication to the style will most certainly rub people in the wrong direction. But I couldn’t be me!
Where “M3gan” fell into the world of involuntary camp “, M3GAN 2.0” lives in the world of bad right camp. The logic of the film? At best questionable. Performance? Vehicles for dialogue that exist only to explain the stronger intrigue. The moments intended to inspire clichés and “Yaaas queens” of the public? So the ham could be cooked with honey. Those who hope for a sequence of real horror in shape will surely be disappointed, but there is a lot of pleasure in finding in the disorderly chaos of M3gan.
M3GAN 2.0 is a bad right camp, for the better and the worst
Located two years after the artificially intelligent companion Robot M3gan (friend Donald, voice of Jenna Davis) became a thug and tried to destroy anyone who threatened her relationship with the young Cady (McGraw Violet) – including the aunt of Cady Gemma (Allison Williams), the brilliant inventor who created M3gan – Gemma learns that the popraire subendogue for M3gan was stolen and used for an under-year military entrepreneur for M3GAN has been stolen and used for an under-year military contractor for M3GAN has been stolen and used for an under-year military entrepreneur for M3GAN has been stolen and used for an under-year military contractor for M3GAN has been stolen and used for an under-year military entrepreneur for M3GAN has been stolen and used for a flexible weapon defense of Amelia to be used as the spy of ultimate killer infiltration. Unfortunately, AMELIA’s AI is advancing faster than anyone imagined, and it is in Gemma, Cady, M3gan and the commercial partners of Gemma Tess (Jen Van Eppps) and Cole (Brian Jordan Alvarez) to stop Amelia before she took control of the world.
Where the villain of “M3gan” was the titular character, “M3gan 2.0” is a clustercuss of technician and badly oriented wickedness. Should we fear Amelia? Should we fear the incompetent government? Should we fear that the new anti-ai expert boy from Gemma, Christian? Should we fear the billionaire of hilarious technology with the least subtle name of all time, Alton Appleton (Jemaine Clement)? Should we fear M3gan herself? Should we fear the additional sub -intrigues that I do not even mention because it is a massive spoiler? By trying to say everything about technology, war, capitalism and the bond of trauma with robots, the film ends up ringing as if it was a buffer in the middle of the sentence; But by doing only Choices ™The rest inadvertently imitates our own relationship with AI – it evolves too quickly and it looks like an impossibility of fully feeling the weight of each new information. He throws so many ideas on the screen that even when the story is not calculated (like the way a hiding m3gan can design an underground bunker, with an interior decoration and framed portraits, but in one way or another, he does not have the power to build a new body?), Are you almost too dazzled by chaos to care.
In Bruce Labruce’s Notes on campHe recognized that the subversive artistic expression, intrinsically counter -culture known as the “camp”, had been appropriate, fetishized and merchant by the dominant current – the spirit of extravagance and theatrical exaggeration of aesthetics, humor and sensitivity are always very apparent, but the notion of aesthetics has been watered down so that the mass is always apparent. These films, known as “Bad Straight Camp”, intentionally boast of the art of camp which can always appease the general public. Films like “Twilight”, the filmography of Baz Luhrmann, and any action film featuring someone like Arnold Schwarzenegger or Steven Seagal resident all in the same cinematographic cul-de-sac as “M3gan 2.0”. It is knowingly more, visually maximalist and emotionally shallow – but it is also the genre. Whether it is a shiny satire or a hot waste depends entirely on your tolerance for nonsense packed by the action, the stroke of the genre and the queens with revenge in their mother cards.
The more M3GAN 2.0 does not work, the more it works … in one way or another?
The original “m3gan” did not feel like having been designed for virality – it was viral. But “M3gan 2.0?” She knows she is supervised. Cady’s School Locker containing a poster by Steven Seagal, M3gan dancing like a robot for an adoring crowd, the fact that she slips into a combination of a large cliff, singing “This Woman’s Work” by Kate Bush (Honestly, killing), and its junction lines like “Hold on your Vaginas” all feel like being included specifically to find yourself in a photo dumping up by a account named @ cinephilemeslayer69 the opening weekend. As funny as these moments are, they feel mandated. Where the camp of the first film felt spontaneous, as if it stumbles and landed in a model of meme, the chaos of this suite feels more calculated. Not necessarily in the wrong direction, but you can smell the studio’s fingers on the pulse. And strangely, the evidence trying I got attached to the film more, like when my mother sends me photos of her parade of local pride with legend: “I am with your people!”
However, credit where it is due: the writer-director Gerard Johnstone did not give up saying something On the dangers of AI, and the political account of the film has evolved to reflect the way real life is walking Towards the lifting of the girlfriend robot ai. Ivanna Sakhno plays Amelia with an icy perfection, and I only want us to have more screen time with her character. But instead of letting it cook, the film is surprised to explain its own crazy logic too much. Despite all my pedantic complaints, I have always found a lot of joy in getting into this world and giving myself to this story of banana killers, corrupt governments, nightmare scenarios and tropes of 90s action films. There may not be fear that it moves, but there are combat sequences with a really fun body and amelia With Allison Williams), and you never surprise me by plain. It is a ridiculous film like the hell that swings seriously for fences, and like the other examples of bad straight camp, I have always engulfed everything like the little brain pig that I am.
The original “M3gan” was a drag show. “M3GAN 2.0” is a dragster show where a right bachelor’s bachelorette diverts the VIP table. But as it makes a tip, is a respectful ally and has a non-ironic appreciation for “above the law”, it can remain.
/ Film assessment: 6.5 out of 10
