The legend of rock Brian Wilson, one of the founding members of the Beach Boys, died on June 11, 2025, at the age of 82. Wilson was instantly congratulated by musicians and fans around the world, who admired his career who went up in the early 1960s. Wilson, as many know, fought against mental health all his life, arousing an even deeper sympathy and understanding of his millions of faithful. The world has lost a giant. Rock ‘N’ Roll would not have been the same without him.
While Wilson was a musical prodigy, with regard to films, he was a little less of course. As part of the Beach Boys, he played in some fanciful films and adapted to children like “The Girls on the Beach” from 1965 and Disney’s film “The uncle of the monkey” the same year. On the film, Wilson was more frequently seen by giving interviews for documentaries like “Theremin: An Electronic Odyssey” and Bruce Willis’ master’s device “The return of Bruno”. He was also in the 2018 Doc “Echo in the Canyon”, about the music scene of Laurel Canyon in Los Angeles over the years, although most of his Doc appearances were in films made about him.
Regarding his taste in films, Wilson said he was largely ignorant of the medium. The many Wilson fans are probably aware of the 2007 interview which he gave to the Asbury Park Press (Easily transcribed by Spin Magazine) where he was asked what films he had recently seen. Wilson admitted that he did not often go out to the movies, but recently seen The famous Eddie Murphy bomb “Norbit”. In this film, Murphy played both a shy young man and his oppressive and abusive girlfriend. Wilson said that “Norbit” is a “fantastic film. Very funny”. When he was asked what his favorite film was, he replied that it was “Norbit”.
Fortunately, Wilson was able to modify this a few years later.
Brian Wilson loved Pinocchio and … Norbit?
The “Norbit” of Brian Robbins, for those who are fortunate to not know, was one of the most notoriously bad films of the 2000s. He was hated by criticism, which obtained a 9% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, on the basis of 122 journals. Many criticisms have estimated that he was mean and funny, and that Shtick with multiple characteristics of Murphy was thin. He was nominated for seven raid Awards, but also an Oscar, for his excellent invented makeup of Rick Baker. It is curious that Brian Wilson, looking for a film to be seen in 2007, focuses on “Norbit”. Although the choices were thin on the weekend “Norbit”, it opened its doors in front of “Hannibal Rising”. There is also the probability that he was only dragging the interviewer, because Wilson had the reputation of using his sense of offbeat humor to play with people.
In 2015, however, Wilson was again questioned – This time therefore – What was his favorite film, and he mentioned a classic more clever: he said that his favorite film was the animated adaptation of Ben Sharpsteen and Hamilton Luske in 1940 “Pinocchio”. This is a logical choice as one of the songs in this film, “When You Wish of A Star”, served as inspiration for Wilson’s song “Surfer Girl”. This is something he confirmed in the maintenance of consequence.
Of course, an animated fantasy like “Pinocchio” is far from the cheeky and bass slapstick of “Norbit”. The 1940 film is still largely seen to date, and its distributor, Disney, maintains its video and video editions at home. His songs, from Leigh Harline and Ned Washington, are still sung in modern households. The film was even redone in Live Action and CGI by Robert Zemeckis in 2022And Guillermo Del Toro made his own version of the classic tale and won an Oscar for that. “Norbit” remains only notorious and has never undergone serious critical reassessment. It remains also hated in 2025 as before.
Well, hated by everyone except Brian Wilson. He loved her enough to call him one of his favorites, allegedly.
Brian Wilson also loved birds
Wilson was able to add to his favorite list a second time in 2015 when promoting the Biopic “Love & Mercy”, released on June 5 of the same year. In an Ama RedditWe asked Wilson what his favorite film was, and it seemed to be better prepared this time. He mentioned that his favorite film was Alfred Hitchcock’s horror film in 1963 “The Birds”. This film concerns the inhabitants of a small bay in northern California who find that local avians are, for unknown reasons, become crazy and will occasionally come together to attack and kill humans. It can be said that birds attack humans for environmental reasons, or that humans express an ineffable form of wickedness, but the film never gives a clear reason why animals have become violent.
On the Reddit AMA, Wilson was asked for Blank Point, “What is your favorite film?” What he wrote:
“‘The Birds’ by Alfred Hitchcock, because he had a sense of humor. The car of a guy exploded and he was killed, and that made me laugh for any reason, running from birds.”
Wilson had a deliciously dark sense of humor. And there is certainly a level of absurdity to the “birds” of which Alfred Hitchcock was undoubtedly aware. The director was not without a mean sense of humor, and Wilson was probably just going there. Several fans immediately commented that Wilson’s response was perfect.
Now comes the time for a courageous theater owner to program “Norbit”, “Pinocchio” and “The Birds” as a triple characteristic. A coarse comedy, a children’s fairy tale and a horror film on killer birds. The three films could not be more different. Wilson, it seems, had a fairly eclectic taste. Rest in peace, Mr. Wilson. The world is small without you.
