Marvel Had To Make One Change To Sentry’s Thunderbolts Story Due To Spider-Man

“Thunderbolts *” establishes Bob, alias Sentry (Lewis Pullman), as One of the most powerful beings in the Marvel cinematographic universe. While finally beats his wicked alter ego, the void, and the sides of the holder Superteam, the morally conflictual supeu always seems that he is a bad mood that destroys the world. After all, Sentinel powers and capacities Eclicing those with all the thunderbolt combined, and his temperament makes him unpredictable and dangerous. That said, it is sympathetic because of its tragic background frame: a drug addict which was used as laboratory rat disposable by a company trying to manufacture superheroes. Its original story in the comics is different, but ended up being changed for the film – because “Spider -Man: No Way Way” arrived first.

In an interview WonderThe director of “Thunderbolts *”, Jake Schreier, revealed that he was inspired by Paul Jenkins and “Sentry” # 1 by Jae Lee during the film. In his first appearance of Marvel comics, Bob is presented as an average married amnesiac which suddenly remembers his past life as a powerful superhero. It is not a good thing, however, because the void – the nasty part of his character – is a real nightmare to manage.

It is an interesting premise, but “Spider-Man: No Way Way Home” explores a similar concept when Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) erases the memories of all those who know Peter Parker (Tom Holland) To prevent the multiverse from imploding. Schreier wanted his film to stand out alone, so “Thunderbolts *” goes to another direction, but Jenkin’s comic and Lee always inspired him in other ways.

Thunderbolts * embraces Meta-Origines of Sentry

The introduction of Sentry to Marvel Comics is one of the great marketing stunts in history. The publisher announced the character as a “lost” concept created by Stan Lee and Artie Rosen in the 1960s – the one who never managed to print. Marvel used his editorials and the media to manipulate the readers to believe that the fake character behind the story of the scene, before admitting that it was a whole ploy and Paul Jenkins was the real creator.

In addition, the series of Jenkins and Jae Lee inserts a sentry in the events of the old comics, adding a meta-element to the saga. It inspired Jake Schreier, who felt “Thunderbolts *” needed his own meta magic. This is exposed in the scene where the corrupt politician Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia-Louis Dreyfus) reveals her plans for Sentry. As the director explained:

“Much of the film meta is trying to create a superhero. I thought:” Well, that’s this [Marvel] do.’ So, in this scene where Bob learns to use his powers and they build a costume behind him, all this comes from our real costume service. And there is a 3D printer of [property master] Russell Bobbitt. We do the same thing as Val does in the film, so it was our little wink to the meta-ideas of the way we represent the superhero. “”

While Schreier failed to completely kiss the original background of Sentry, he at least was able to pay tribute to his strange and eccentric history. And the version of Sentry that we meet in “Thunderbolts *” could become an influential part of the MCU in the future, proving that the changes made by the film to the character are worth it.
