“What happened that night has changed everything,” said Mortensen through tears, by CBS News. “Because of him, four beautiful, authentic and compassionate have been removed from this world without reason.”
“What he did broke me in places that I did not know could break,” continued Mortensen. “I should have understood who I was. I should have had the university experience and start to establish my future. Instead, I was forced to learn to survive the unimaginable. ”
According to Mortensen, since the murders, she has undergone panic crises and was terrified to be alone.
“I can’t breathe, I can’t think, I can’t stop trembling. It is far beyond anxiety. It is my body that revives everything even and still. My nervous system has never received the message that it is finished, and that won’t let me forget what it did to them,” she said.
Mortensen addressed Kohberger, calling him “hollow ship, something less than human, a body without empathy, without remorse”.
She said, “He chose destruction. He chose evil. He doesn’t feel anything. He tried to take everything from me: my friends, my security, my identity, my future. ”
Mortensen said Kohberger “could never take my voice”, describing how she will continue to honor her friends killed.
“He will never take the memories I had with them. He will never erase the love we have shared, the laughter we had or the way they made me feel and whole. These things are mine. They are sacred, and he will never touch them, “she said, adding:” He will stay here, empty, forgotten and helpless. “

Funke said that she had known Survivor’s guilt on the death of her roommates, which was exacerbated by vitriol shared via social media.
“I was flooding death threats and hateful messages from people who did not know me at all or who knew the dynamics of our friendship. The media harassed not only me but also my family, “she said. “People introduced themselves to our house, they called my phone, my parents’ phones, the other phones of family members – and we were prosecuted while I was still trying to survive emotionally and cry.”
Funke concluded his statement: “For a long time, I could barely get out of bed
