The New Superman Trailer Is The Complete Opposite Of Man Of Steel (And That’s Fine)

When will you go back the last time you were motivated to look in the sky and feel inspired, full of wonder and hope for the future? If you have been an adult or nearby since the beginning of the century, it has probably been a good time. Retrospectively, it is very unfortunate that the tragic attacks of September 11, 2001 occurred well when the superhero cinema was starting to really take root, because it meant that the multitude of beloved characters who were brought to the cinema screens should be perceived through an objective of skepticism and granular suspicion. Although this does wonders for certain characters, who came directly on questions of politics and morality (like the X-Men) or often struggled with their darker nature (as we see in “Spider-Man 3” and the “Dark Knight” trilogy by Christopher Nolan), this approach was not a size.

“Man of Steel” by Zack Snyder is the apotheosis The way the “dark and grainy” approach to superheroes could become. In itself, it is a fascinating and cold deconstruction of the character of Superman, his myth and his meaning for us human beings if such a Kryptonian could ever exist in reality. As a superman film, and especially as a retroactive beginning in a cinematographic universe, the film is a resounding Slog, the emotional equivalent of Ayn Rand making an audio -B book of the writings of Friedrich Nietzsche. It is a film so imbued with its own thesis “and if” that its visual allusions sharp on September 11 are less stimulating and more undesirable.

Today, the latest trailer for James Gunn’s “Superman” has fallen, and as for all the other glimpses that we have obtained in the film, it seems that it is the total antithesis of “Man of Steel”. This does not mean that the pendulum has completely swayed in the other direction, and we obtain strength nourished by cheesy nonsense which would have been better suited for a version of the character in the middle of the 20th century. Instead, Gunn’s point of view on Supes feels remarkably balanced, refreshing and exciting, proving that there is much more in the character than some could have thought after his deconstruction in the hands of Snyder.

Superman asks us to “look up” and it’s not just about Hopcore

Undoubtedly, “Man of Steel” fans, Henry Cavill and Snyder Superman Social media will flood with invectives directed to Gunn and “Superman”, as they have been doing for several months since the first preview of the first film. This last trailer will not do much to suppress this horde and be Frank, who cares about it; These people decided a long time ago. What this trailer could do for other people who are on the fence of Gunn’s approach to Kal-El is to show them that there is a little more in store than a simple superman who has a friendly disposition, a haircut Spiffy Zoomer and an adorable dog.

Indeed, there is a lot of things here, even more than in previous trailers and television spots We have seen: Yes, there are more Sudes sequences that are fighting than Kaiju in the midst of the metropolis and saving certain children in a country torn by the war, but there are also the other characters in the DC universe who seem to play a key role here, as well as more Nicholas Hoult of Lex Luthor and its contrafprint. Meanwhile, David Corenswet’s Superman seems to be Quippy in a truly naturalistic way, while Lois Lane by Rachel Brosnahan is not only relegated to the touch; She is piloting a spatial pod thing! Register me!

The tone of All Star Superman is very lively in Superman

Beyond the whole promise of the bizarre adventure that this film can hold, this trailer solidifies the tonal approach of the titular character, and it is the one that remembers the most closely “All-Star Superman”, one of the largest comics ever made. Written by Grant Morrison and in pencil by Frank Quitly, the series of 12 numbers is a remarkable insufficiency of the character’s extent, from Goody Two-Shoes Symbol of Americana to an outsider breath of the uncertain world of his place in the universe. Foot and Morrison on Superman is both shiny and multilayer, and while Gunn, Corenswet and the rest of the “Superman” crew saw the book as one of their main inspirations For the film (as they admitted at an event that I attended in December), it is also true that this tonal balance is something that Gunn has proven itself. These films do a remarkable job to be optimistic without being disgusting or too sentimental, and it seems that Gunn has also brought this approach to “Superman”.

More than anything else, this new “Superman” seems to be more than a simple replica to “Man of Steel” and in the last years of films in which the superhero has appeared. It looks like an honest vision of the character, his cast of support and his universe, warts and everything. For those who could say that this is not the moment of a more optimistic Superman, I invoke the observation of Jor-El of “Superman: The Movie” of 1978: we can be a formidable people; We wish to be. We only have the light to show the way. We have not had a ton of hope in our adult life for 25 years, it’s true. But I have hope for “Superman”, and for the moment, that’s enough.

“Superman” will be released in theaters on July 11, 2025.
