The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 Episode 9 Puts An Explosive End To The Love Triangle

Spoilers follow.

What happens when a double agent chooses the bad side? What if is someone you love? These are some of the many Difficult questions that the last season “The Handmaid’s Tale” poses. The dazzling climb of Nick from a driver to a commander himself turned out to be at hand for the secret missions of June throughout the series. But as Showrunners remind us in her“He had to do something to contribute to this ascent.”

Season 6 broke the trance of the flow of Nick. Nick wanted to take June to Paris, ignore completely – and not really care – June’s mission to release Gilead. The mother and Luke de June also warned him that Nick is Nazi. The series insists this message at home when we learn that Nick was directly responsible for the Jezebels lined up and executed by a shooting team. At this stage, June sleeps with the very enemy that she tries to defeat.

The showrunners stress that “Nick had many opportunities to leave and leave with June. He was in Canada and he made the choice and many times to return to Gilead and double Gilead.” When Nick gets on the plane for Washington DC and refers to other commanders like the “winners”, he is no longer the silhouette without a doule playing for both sides. He makes his allegiance clear and is just as weak as other men who need to feel powerful by injuring others.

The explosion of aircraft completely destroys everything drumped on the Luke team against the Nick team. This is the way of telling us that under this violently oppressive patriarchy, a good old -fashioned and happy love triangle is always eccentric. The fate of Nick makes us reassess if the end of June will even imply a romance.

Nick’s death lets June leave Gilead behind

Max Minghella told her that he was surprised by the end of Nick:

“I have always considered the relationship of June and Nick as a kind of stay of the darkest and most intense elements of the series. So I thought it was a really daring and interesting choice to bring this story in this more nihilist point of view.”

Nick helped June live sex during his enslavement which was not spoiled by pain and assault. June did not know if she would see Luke again, so her romance with Nick was a lively light in the darkness of Gilead. Their intense link has become as strong a motivator as saving Hannah.

June was the only woman with whom Nick had a link while being forced to marry others. Although these pressures are stressful, Gilead men have freedom and ascending mobility. The tragedy with Jezebels gave us an overview of the Gestapo type orders of which Nick was probably part. The death of Nick is symbolic of the end of Gilead’s grip in June. Once Nick has clarified his allegiances, it was the only way June could really be free.

Even if June and Luke “meet together”, there is so much trauma between them that the reconstruction of a peaceful life will have much more than to rekindle romance. Many June decisions throughout the series have turned around men – men chosen for her, and her choices that survive in a world built by and for them. It is now time for June to let go of the woman and the lover and to define herself beyond the boxes in which men have put it; Handmaids and gilead women have already learned that they are much more than that.

The last episode of “The Handmaid’s Tale” Hits Hulu on Tuesday May 27.
